Max Homa got off to a slow start at the 2025 PGA Championship with a first round 73 but a 64 on Friday saw Max roaring back to contention after he shot a 30 on the front 9 which included a near hole-in-one on the par-4 14th (347 yards). Sitting in a tie for 5th place, Max Homa had aspirations to go low on the weekend.

Unfortunately for Max Homa, a fan favorite on the PGA Tour, he would follow up his 64 with weekend scores of 76-77 which included a final round where Homa didn’t record a single par on the back 9 (6 bogeys, 3 birdies) and finish tied for 60th place at +6. Afterward, a patron would come clean about his role in Max Homa’s demise.

I know what you might be thinking but this wasn’t a Happy Gilmore situation with a heckler hired by a Shooter McGavin type figure to follow Max around Quail Hollow Club and get under his skin. This was much simpler. It was a fan who had posted up on the 18th hole and built a little home for his drink so it wouldn’t spill.

Yesterday, I came across this post on Reddit’s r/golf from the fan who shared their story with the simple title of ‘confession.’ They wrote “I was sitting by the 18th fairway at Quail. I had made a little nest out of the pine straw so my transfusion didn’t tip over on the slope. Max Homa’s drive landed in my drink spot and he had a terrible lie for his second shot. The look on his face hurt my heart.”

In the post, they included a photo of Max Homa arriving to see the horrible lie his ball had on 18 all due to this fan building a pine straw nest for his drink. Unreal.

Here is the shot tracker from Max’s 18th hole:

Based on Max Homa’s peach shirt and the PGA Tour shot tracker, this incident occurred on Sunday. Max Homa would, naturally, record a bogey on the 18th hole after that horrible hand he’d been dealt from the fan.

For his tie for 60th place at Quail Hollow Club, Max Homa earned $27,014.25. There’s no concrete evidence Max would’ve par’d the hole without that lie, but if Max didn’t bogey the 18th he would have finished tied for 55th which paid out $32,138, so a swing of $5,123.75… Someone owes Max some drinks.
