Texas High School Football Powerhouse Gets Humbled After Handshake Snub

DeSoto football players would not shake hands with St. Thomas Aquinas.


The DeSoto Fighting Eagles did not shake hands with the St. Thomas Aquinas High School football team before kickoff on Saturday. They were then blown out on the field.

The Eagles were quickly humbled after the snub in a 38-14 shellacking. The bad sportsmanship backfired as it was followed by a poor performance.

DeSoto did not appear to respect their opponent. They looked silly as a result.

DeSoto and St. Thomas Aquinas met for a heavyweight showdown to kick off the high school football season. The game, which garnered national attention, was completely one-sided.

The Eagles are one of the best teams in the state of Texas, entering with a Top 5 ranking. They are considered the 35th-best program in the country.

DeSoto travelled 1,300 miles east to Fort Lauderdale over the weekend to play St. Thomas Aquinas. The Raiders boast the nation’s No. 2 team.

The Raiders used the disrespect as motivation. It fueled them to a decisive victory.

The game got out of hand quickly for the Eagles, who trailed by 38 points at halftime. It was ugly.

Notre Dame commit Julius Jones broke the St. Thomas Aquinas record for career receiving yards in the rout, a mark that had stood since 1979.

The offense wasn’t the only unit to find the endzone.

St. Thomas Aquinas dominated all three phases of the game. They did not need to score in the second half. The Raiders let off the gas after halftime, allowing DeSoto to score its only 14 points of the contest.

The win was a statement for the Raiders, who are now 2-0. They’ve outscored their opponents 80-14 to solidify their standing as one of high school football’s best teams.

DeSoto, meanwhile, is now 0-1 after the blowout. That result made the pregame antics look even more foolish.
