  • Carson Wentz’s first season in Indianapolis was full of ups and downs.
  • Wentz led the Colts to a 9-8 record, which wasn’t good enough to qualify for the playoffs.
  • After a shaky first season, reports indicate the Colts will “probably” cut or trade Wentz.

Carson Wentz’s tenure as the Indianapolis Colts’ quarterback could be over after just one rollercoaster season, as ESPN’s Chris Mortensen is reporting that his future with the team “looks bleak” and that the AFC South team will “probably” release or trade the 29-year-old quarterback.

“Right now, it looks bleak,” Mortensen said on ESPN’s ‘NFL Countdown. “By March 18, he will probably be traded or released. Wentz has $50 million of his base salary is guaranteed. For Carson Wentz and the Colts, it looks like it was a one-year marriage that went wrong.”

Wentz hasn’t even been with the organization for a full year yet as the Colts traded for him back on March 17, 2021, sending a 2021 third-round pick and a 2022 conditional second-round pick (which became a first-round pick) to the Philadelphia Eagles for the former #2 overall draft pick.

The breaking point for Wentz came in the final game of the season. Needing a win at the Jacksonville Jaguars, the worst team in the league, to earn a berth to the postseason, Wentz and the Colts completed imploded, losing the game by a score of 26-11. Wentz was particularly awful in the game, completing 17 of 29 passes for 185 yards, one touchdown, and one interception.

Once thought of as being on his way to the game’s elite class, Wentz’s star has dimmed considerably in recent years. During the 2021 regular season, Wentz completed 322 of 516 passes for 3,563 yards, 27 touchdowns, and seven interceptions. In addition to Wentz, the Colts also have quarterbacks Sam Ehlinger and James Morgan on the roster.
