Iowa’s Basketball Coach Has Peak ‘Hold Me Back’ Moment With Ref After Getting T’d Up

The Iowa Hawkeyes (7-3) lost a close one to the Wisconsin Badgers (8-2) on Sunday. The Hawkeyes and Badgers were tied at 27-27 in the first half and both teams scored 33 in the 2nd to send the game to overtime.

It was in overtime when the Wisconsin Badgers just edged out the Iowa Hawkeyes and won the game 78-75. Iowa’s head coach Fran McCaffery received a technical foul with roughly 4 minutes left in the game. That technical foul allowed Wisconsin to go up 56-52 on the Hawkeyes.

After Fran McCaffery got t’d up, he had an all-time ‘hold me back!’ moment. The Iowa Hawkeyes head coach was mean mugging the refs as hard as he possibly could. With other coaches this might’ve been intimidating but Fran McCaffery has the kind face of a librarian or a preacher. There’s not an intimidating bone in his body. So seeing him restrained by his assistants is hilarious:

That was a classic moment of ‘hold me back because I don’t want to actually do anything at all.’ Everything about that exchange was comical in its own way. Head Coach McCaffery’s intimidating look is even funnier when you consider the context of who was on the court.

Two of head coach Fran McCaffery’s sons currently play for the Iowa Hawkeyes. Patrick McCaffery had 24 points in 33 minutes during Iowa’s loss. And Connor McCaffery had 17 points in 41 minutes. If anyone on the court had seem Fran’s ‘intimidating’ look before it was certainly his kids.

The more I look at the video of Iowa Hawkeyes coach Fran McCaffery losing his mind the funnier it is. It’s unclear what caused him to turn beat red at that moment. But the man is truly the color of a ripe tomato.

McCaffery and Iowa now benefit from an easy slate of games until facing #14 Indiana on January 5th.
