Former Purdue center Zach Edey is incredibly tall. At 7-foot-4, it’s truly unfathomable just how big he is. The two-time defending National Player of the Year heard his name called in the top ten of the 2024 NBA Draft when the Memphis Grizzlies selected him with the 9th-overall pick.

That was a pretty big surprise, as most places had him going in the mid-teens at the earliest, with expectations he could be on the board well into the 20s.

Now, he will be teammates with superstar Memphis guard Ja Morant. 2023-2024 was a lost season for Morant marred by a long suspension for off-court conduct and then a long-term injury to his shoulder. Altogether, the 24-year-old was limited to just nine games.

But, as long as he’s available, the Grizzlies are contenders in the West, and Zach Edey should fit in nicely next to Jaren Jackson Jr. in the frontcourt.

I’m sure that Ja Morant wasn’t expecting Zach Edey to be his teammate when the draft started, but when he found out, the Murray State alum had a hilarious response.

Take a look at what he posted to his Instagram story.

Yeah, that’s right on the nose. What a great meme.

There are definitely going to be some big questions about Zach Edey in the NBA, especially on defense. It’s hard to see him being agile enough to contain guards on ball screens, and that’s going to be a liability.

On the other hand, he’s 7-foot-4 and an absolute phenom on offense as a post scorer and on the offensive glass. He can legitimately play for his size, with really good touch and a developing shooting stroke. it’s going to be fascinating to watch him play in the NBA next season with Ja Morant and the Grizzlies.
