Pittsburgh Steelers fans did not appreciate what Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence had to say about their ‘Terrible Towels’ earlier in the week. It was the latter who got the last laugh on Sunday!

The ‘Terrible Towel,’ for those who don’t know, is as simple as it sounds.

It is a black and yellow towel that Pittsburgh fans have waved since 1975. Myron Cope, a former sports broadcaster for the Steelers, wanted to create a sense of unity amongst the fanbase and ultimately landed on the Terrible Towel.

The tradition stuck. They are now a huge part of game day in the Steel City.

Trevor Lawrence, in his third NFL season, played the first game of his career in Pittsburgh this weekend. He said prior to the matchup that he was excited.

It’s definitely one to check off the list, playing in cool stadiums, history places, and obviously Pittsburgh — [the] whole organization has an aura around it that’s really cool. You always know what kind of team Pittsburgh is going to have each year — physical, great defense, and their offense is playing really well.

He was also asked whether he knew about the Terrible Towels. Lawrence’s innocuous response quickly sent the Steelers fanbase into a frenzy.

I know what they are! The little yellow towels that they swing around!

There was no intentional disrespect what he said, but Pittsburgh fans were furious. They were even angrier on Sunday afternoon when their team lost to the Jaguars by 10.

Former Wyoming defensive back Andrew ‘Dewey’ Wingard (who rocks some incredible flowing locks like his quarterback) recorded his first interception of the season for Jacksonville during the fourth quarter. It was a crucial moment in the game that swung the momentum entirely in favor of the visitors.

To celebrate, Wingard and a few of his teammates ran over to the stands. They proceeded to snatch a pair of terrible towels from the closest Steelers fans and waved them over their heads.

Wingard and company obviously knew what they were doing. Pittsburgh melted down over Lawrence’s comments about the Terrible Towel. His teammates proceeded to throw it right back in their faces.

And — most importantly — they won.

Don’t look now but the Jacksonville Jaguars are 6-2 going into their bye week!
