Jalen Carter, a two-time national champion with the Georgia Bulldogs and highly-touted NFL draft prospect, has released an official statement regarding the warrant that has been issued for his arrest.

According to a statement from the Athens-Clarke County Police Department, Carter has been implicated for partaking in the street race that ultimately took the life of his former teammate Chandler LeCroy.

Officially, Carter — who police say “was racing his 2021 Jeep Trackhawk against the 2021 Ford Expedition driven by the recruiting staffer, 24-year-old Chandler LeCroy, which led to the Jan. 15 wreck” [via ESPN] — has been charged with reckless driving and racing.

You can find Carter’s full statement below:

This morning, I received a telephone call from the Athens Georgi Police Department informing me that two misdemeanor warrants have been issued against me for reckless driving and racing. Numerous media reports also have circulated this morning containing inaccurate information concerning the tragic events of January 15, 2023.

It is my intention to return to Athens to answer the misdemeanor charges against me and to make certain that the complete and accurate truth is presented. There is no question in my mind that when all of the facts are known that I will be fully exonerated of any criminal wrongdoing.

Prior to this incident, Carter was considered to be one of the top prospects in the 2023 NFL Draft, with some analysts predicting he could be selected in the top five picks.

A defensive tackle for the University of Georgia Bulldogs from 2020 to 2022, Carter finished the 2022 season with 32 tackles (16 solo), three sacks, two forced fumbles, and three pass defenses. In total, Carter racked up 83 tackles during his college career in Athens.

Given this talent, while this incident might impact Carter’s draft stock, the 21-year-old will likely still be taken in the first round regardless of the outcome of his arrest warrant.
