Professional soccer player Jesus de Miguel has died after an on-field collision

Jesús de Miguel, a 30-year-old professional soccer player in Spain, tragically died on Tuesday, November 3, after suffering a cardiac arrest following a violent collision with an opposing goalkeeper during a match the previous day.

de Miguel, a forward for Spanish second-division club CD Tenerife, was struck in the chest by FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono during the closing moments of Monday’s match, with the collision causing De Miguel to collapse on the field.

The incident occurred deep into stoppage time during Monday’s match between Tenerife and Andorra, which was tied 2-2 at the time. Owono rushed out of his penalty area to clear a long ball and collided with De Miguel near midfield, striking the forward in the chest with his knee.

De Miguel immediately collapsed following the collision and suffered a cardiorespiratory arrest, prompting medical personnel to rush onto the field and administer emergency treatment.

The 30-year-old was later transported to a nearby hospital, while Owono received a straight red card and the match was abandoned.

Although Tenerife initially reported that De Miguel was in stable condition despite the severity of his injuries, the club announced early Tuesday morning that his neurological condition had deteriorated. De Miguel was pronounced dead at approximately 8 a.m. local time on November 3.

“Racked with pain, with a lump in our throats and unable to believe that this is true,” Tenerife said in a statement announcing the tragic news. “There are no words of comfort; there is absolutely nothing that can alleviate this feeling overflowing with sadness.”

Spanish authorities have launched an investigation into the incident, according to the Associated Press. De Miguel had been playing professionally in Spain since 2015 and joined Tenerife in 2025, where he scored 11 goals in 34 appearances.

The club also shared a message from De Miguel’s family, who thanked supporters for their outpouring of condolences while requesting privacy as they mourn his death.

In the aftermath of the incident, another soccer player named Michel Owono, who plays for Spanish club CF Can Vidalet, revealed that he had been receiving racist insults, threats, and hateful messages from people mistakenly believing he was Jesús Owono, the goalkeeper involved in the collision.

In a statement posted to social media, Michel clarified that he had nothing to do with the incident, offered his condolences to De Miguel’s family, and condemned the abuse he’d received due to the confusion. He also called for greater empathy and respect, reminding fans that football should bring people together rather than divide them.
