These Dragsters With Turbine-Powered Engines Are Jaw-Droppingly Fast Off The Line

It’s been one HOT minute since the last time I found myself at the Drag Racing track, and by that I mean I probably haven’t been to once since I was in Elementary School decades ago. Given how long it’s been since I’ve hit the track I’ll ask you regulars out there to cut me some slack here in not being an expert about these turbine-powered dragsters that legitimately sound like fighter jets off the line.

This clip comes from the Bandimere Speedway in Morrison, Colorado which is known as ‘Thunder Mountain’ in the NHRA. These tuned-up drag cars are some of the fastest vehicles on the planet and can reach top speeds of around 290 MPH because they’re literally powered by the turbines from jets.

Here are two of these badass vehicles going head to head last weekend at the track. I highly suggest turning up the volume for this so that you can get the full effect of what’s happening because these engines sound straight up nasty:

Can we take a moment to appreciate how much fire these cars shoot out of the turbines? Just look at this nastiness:

It looks like the nearest NHRA partner track to where I live *that also* has Jet Car races is actually pretty damn far away. I did some digging and I’m not stoked about what I’ve found. But this also seems like something that might be worth driving several hours to see.
