Just in case there was any doubt before, New York Jets owner Woody Johnson had made it painstakingly clear: the team is in the market for a franchise quarterback not named Zach Wilson.
As per ProFootballTalk, while speaking to the media this week, Johnson indicated that if head coach Robert Saleh and general manager Joe Douglas identify a free agent quarterback they desire, Johnson will “absolutely be ready to spend what it takes to get him” because a franchise signal-caller is a “missing piece.”
Johnson told reporters today that if Jets General Manager Joe Douglas and head coach Robert Saleh tell him there’s a veteran quarterback they need, Johnson will “absolutely” be ready to spend what it takes to get him.
“That’s the missing piece,” Johnson said of a franchise quarterback.
That is simply a devastating thing for an owner to say when his franchise invested a #2 overall pick in the position about 20 months ago. Johnson’s comments certainly aren’t surprising, though, considering that the Jets think so little of Wilson that they benched him for on-the-verge-of-retirement Joe Flacco and journeyman no-name Mike White.
Johnson’s comments also come ahead of a free agency period that could see 26-year-old former MVP Lamar Jackson hit the market, as he has yet to come to an agreement with the Baltimore Ravens.
