While New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh has spent recent weeks reiterating the franchise’s commitment to quarterback Zach Wilson, the subtext of what he’s saying actually suggests anything but.

Take his latest comments about Wilson — the #2 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft — earlier this week, in which he said the 23-year-old needed to “get away from the game for a little bit,” which is simply a shocking damnation of a second-year, highly-touted prospect.

“Yeah, go read a book, go do something. Get away from this game, just reset,” Saleh said during his Wednesday press conference ahead of the Jets’ season finale against the Miami Dolphins.

“I think the greatest strength and greatest gift you can give yourself as a human is to figure out what’s important to you, what do you value and how can you stick to those values day in and day out. That is the greatest gift you can give yourself, is to discover yourself and I think Zach needs to get away, read a book, and figure that out.” [via ProFootballTalk]

Making matters worse for the Jets and their quarterback situation is the fact that they won enough games this season to have a middle-of-the-road draft pick, which likely puts them out of contention to draft any of this year’s top QB prospects.

If the team was smart (which they aren’t), they’d invest their resources in the offensive line and see if they can further develop Mike White. As evidenced by the quarterbacks headed to the postseason, having a truly elite signal caller no longer appears to be necessary if qualifying for the playoffs is the goal.

Saleh, Wilson, and the rest of Gang Green will conclude their up-and-down 2022 season with a matchup against Tua Tagovailoa and the Miami Dolphins, who are still fighting for a spot in the AFC Playoffs.
