While the New York Jets have yet to officially acquire Aaron Rodgers, they’re certainly doing everything they can to make his life comfortable.

Not only did the team already sign former Green Bay Packers wide receiver Allen Lazard to a four-year, $44 million contract, but now they’ve inked backup signal-caller Tim Boyle to a one-year deal.

The 28-year-old Boyle was originally signed as an undrafted free agent by the Packers back in 2018 and would ultimately spend three seasons with the team. Boyle’s time in Green Bay overlapped with Nathaniel Hackett, who is now the offensive coordinator of the Jets — another signing the team has made to seemingly entice Rodgers to join the franchise.

After spending his first three seasons with the Packers, Boyle spent 2021 and 2022 with the Detroit Lions and the Chicago Bears. During his NFL career, Boyle has started in just three games, and that came during the 2021 season with Detroit. In those three starts, Boyle completed 65% of his passes for 526 yards, three touchdowns, and six interceptions.

While Rodgers may be coming off one of the worst seasons of his career — 64% completion percentage, 3,695 yards, 26 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions (his most since 2008) — he’ll see represent a massive upgrade at QB for the Jets, who are now one of the top seven-ish betting favorites to win next year’s Super Bowl given their links to the future Hall of Fame quarterback.

Still, despite Rodgers’ declaration that he intends to play for the Jets next season, New York and Green Bay remain in a negotiation stand-off, as the 39-year-old remains a member of the Packers despite it now being April.

With the draft just three weeks away, many NFL analysts expect the Packers to try to deal Rodgers before them so they can use whatever draft picks they get from the Jets this season. Given how trade talks have unfolded so far, though, it’s possible this drags on into the summer.
