Michelle Beisner-Buck has spent the past decade contributing to ESPN‘s NFL coverage and has been a staple of Monday Night Countdown for the bulk of that span, but she’s been forced to take a temporary hiatus thanks to the freak accident her husband Joe Buck recently recapped before she underwent surgery to treat the ankle he obliterated with a golf ball.

It’s also been a decade since Joe Buck tied the knot with Michelle Beisner, who served as the captain for the Denver Broncos cheerleading squad around the turn of the millennium before pivoting to broadcasting to kick off a new career that began with NFL Network in 2006.

Over the summer, the couple decided to head down to Cabo San Lucas with their twin sons for a vacation. The trip kicked off around a week before Buck was slated to compete in the American Century Championship in Lake Tahoe, so it was only natural that he decided to use some of his free time to hit the course at El Dorado Golf & Beach Club with Michelle.

However, things took an unfortunate turn when Buck’s better half succumbed to the “freak accident” that led to her leg being put in a cast, and over the past couple of months, she’s provided her Instagram followers with updates concerning the status of a “shattered ankle break” that was compounded by “severe nerve damage.”

It was initially unclear exactly how Beisner-Buck managed to break her ankle, but on Wednesday, we finally got the full story courtesy of her husband, who recapped the saga in a video where he outlined the former cheerleader’s decision to “do a headstand at the end of the tee box for good luck” before he hit a drive.

Based on Buck’s recollection of the incident, Michelle not only did a headstand but pulled out a split at the exact moment he made contact with his driver and sent his Taylormade rocketing off the tee before it collided with the inside of her right ankle and “shattered it.”

Michelle says she spent six weeks in a hard cast to let the bone heal before undergoing rehab in an attempt to address the tibial nerve damage stemming from the incident, but she was ultimately forced to get surgery on Wednesday to kick off what should hopefully be her final step toward recovery.
