Joe Burrow led the Cincinnati Bengals to the Super Bowl in what was just his second season in the NFL. Most would imagine that the 25-year-old quarterback will play in another Super Bowl at some point in his career, but getting back to the big game is no easy feat.

Dan Marino’s career is the perfect example of how difficult it is to simply get to the Super Bowl. Marino is one of the greatest quarterbacks to ever do it, and despite making the playoffs 10 times in his career, he only played in one Super Bowl and never won a ring.

Burrow doesn’t have history on his side, either.

According to CBS Sports, each of the last 16 starting quarterbacks to lose in their Super Bowl debut have never made it back to the Super Bowl. Of those 16 quarterbacks, only four are still active, with Jimmy Garoppolo being the most recent example of falling into the trend prior to Burrow.

Of the 16 quarterbacks, Matt Ryan, Donovan McNabb, and the late Steve McNair certainly stand out.

If you’re a betting man, you’d probably wager on Burrow getting back to the Super Bowl at least one more time in his career. This trend, and Burrow’s injury history, may have you second-guessing what the future holds, however.
