Chicago Bears safety Jonathan Owens managed to rile up plenty of people on the internet with some comments about his relationship with Simone Biles, and he’s made it pretty clear he couldn’t care less about the irrational backlash he found himself subjected.

There isn’t a single gymnast on the planet who’s currently more well-known than Simone Biles, who is already the most decorated competitor in the history of the sport and will have the chance to add even more medals to her impressive collection when she heads to Paris for the Summer Olympics.

The Bears were kind enough to give Jonathan Owens (who signed with the team earlier this year after a single season with the Packers) permission to head to France to root for Biles, who he married in 2023 three years after they started dating after meeting on Raya.

Owens shed some light on the start of their relationship during an appearance on The Pivot podcast where he ruffled some feathers by admitting he didn’t know who Biles was when they connected despite some evidence that suggested that wasn’t actually the case (he also added some fuel to the fire by asserting he, not his wife, was the true “catch”).

Biles has repeatedly fired back at the haters who continue to dwell on those comments, and while her husband has largely avoided the issue, he decided to address it during a recent interview with US Weekly where he acknowledged The Discourse he seems to be pretty immune to.

Owens noted he (smartly) doesn’t pay much attention to the online chatter, saying:

“I was actually with my mom and Simone whenever it came out, so, all the comments and everything, I just let them read it. I try to stay off of it, and obviously if you feel like stuff is kind of getting out of hand, that’s when you reach in and say something.”

He added “If you say something, they’re going to say something; if you don’t say something, they’re going to say something” to explain why he hasn’t engaged the trolls, and I can’t say I blame him.
