Earlier this week, the Bills unveiled the “Nickel City” alternate jerseys they’ll be debuting this season. They all-gray uniforms were not greeted with the reception the team was hoping for, and some people are convinced they recruited Josh Allen to defend them after he issued a plea that doesn’t really add up.
Every NFL team has a couple of primary jerseys they don when they’re playing at home and on the road, and they’re usually supplemented by alternate getups they trot out for special occasions.
That includes the Bills, who have been defined by a red, while, and blue color scheme that can be traced back to the jerseys they debuted in 1962. Those uniforms were revamped a couple of years after they played their inaugural season in Buffalo, where they initially rocked a white or blue jersey paired with gray pants and helmets.
Gray has never been a primary color on any iteration of a Bills jersey, but that is no longer the case after we got our first look at the “Nickel City” alternates that were unveiled on Monday.

That uniform was undoubtedly the product of countless hours of meetings and brainstorming that led to the franchise deciding it wanted to pay tribute to the blue-collar ethos of the former industrial hub that firmly falls in “Rust Belt” territory, but it did not land with most fans who were firmly unimpressed by the new offering.
He may not speak for everyone, but this was the response I received from a friend who was born and raised in Buffalo when I asked for his thoughts:
They have at least one prominent proponent after Josh Allen went out of his way to defend them on Wednesday, although fans are skeptical it came from the heart.

Allen didn’t field any questions about the jerseys at a press conference he conducted on Wednesday, but he took the time to rally around them while asking Bills fans to be a bit less critical.

The team didn’t waste any time posting a video on social media to amplify the plea, where he said:
“Stop hating on the jerseys, guys. I don’t know if you guys are hating; I don’t see anything.
They’re great. I honestly like them…It’s a new look. It is. I understand that. We gotta be new. I think these jerseys are symbolic of that. I’m excited to wear them. It symbolizes a lot of newness, and that I am excited about.
I’ve heard a lot of comments about the jerseys. I enjoy them. I think it’s very symbolic of what we want to do and what we want to be. I understand people want the old jerseys and the old helmets and all that, but at some point, we have to move forward and do something new.”
It was not the most ringing endorsement when you consider Allen mostly seemed excited about the “new” factor he referenced four different times without really focusing on anything else. He may have corrected himself, but the fact that he asked people to stop hating immediately before admitting he wasn’t keeping tabs on The Discourse also raised some questions about how organic the statement was.
More than a few fans latched onto the theory that Allen was asked to run interference by the powers that be, as people hopped into the comments to assert the Bills “had to send in the PR secret weapon” and speculate “he was BEGGED to give this statement.”
There’s obviously no way to prove that’s the case, and it’s not like Allen was going to step up to the microphone and say, “Yeah, these are trash.” However, I think it’s fair to be skeptical of the genuineness of his defense.
