Keirstin Roose is set to play a huge role at first base for Coastal Carolina during the 2025 college softball season. The 5-foot-4 senior is off to a hot start through 14 games and the Chanticleers are going to be a real problem out of the Sun Belt.

However, she must be sure to keep her blood sugar in check as someone who lives with diabetes. Hilarity ensued during a game against Kent State when medically-prescribed Skittles became the root cause of a stoppage in the first inning.

I want to be clear that I am only sharing this story in such a light-hearted nature because Roose herself was willing to have a laugh at the situation. Nobody outside of her college softball teammates knew what was going on and it led to widespread confusion!

This comical sequence of events took place last week but only recently did it come to my attention. Keirstin Roose called on the athletic trainer in the top of the first inning, right after the pitcher gave up a solo shot to the Golden Flashes. She needed to check her blood sugar but ultimately decided to just go ahead and get some Skittles from the dugout so the umpire called a timeout for the Chanticleers.

Nobody seemed to know why Roose had to leave the game momentarily. Kent State had no idea what was going on. The fans were equally as baffled. The broadcast announcers thought that she needed treatment related to her shoulder injury from a year ago. They said Coastal Carolina is being very cautious with how they use their first baseman.

Sure enough, Roose was fine after she regulated her blood sugar. She even knocked in an RBI and stole a base during a win. Skittles are the key to success!
