Kelly Stafford, the wife of current Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford, is not afraid to discuss anything. It’s why her podcast The Morning After is so popular.

A perfect example of this occurred on the latest episode of The Morning After when Kelly discussed the “fair and generous” prenup she signed before marrying her famous husband.

The topic was brought up because the guest on this week’s episode was celebrity divorce attorney James Sexton.

“When we were going through this 10 years ago and I had been with my husband for a while before it, but I was still young and very naive of this whole situation,” Kelly Stafford, 36, admitted. “And when we got engaged, we talked about prenups even before getting engaged, and I again, was very naive and I was like I feel like we’re planning our divorce before we’re getting married. I don’t really love the idea.

“But then again, I had to look at it from the other direction and say, ‘Well, if we never get divorced, we’ll never need it anyway.’ So why wouldn’t I?”

Matthew Stafford was ‘very generous’

“And he was very, honestly, it was and it doesn’t even matter, it was very fair. He was obviously very generous in it all,” she continued. “But I think sometimes when you think prenups, you think it’s a negative connotation when you’re talking about marriage. And turns out, I agree with you, like letting you and your significant other decide the terms if a divorce does happen.

“Because I don’t think anyone thinks about it like the state has control and they do. At the end of the day, the government controls that contract. So to make your own is, seems way smarter. But again, there’s just been this negative connotation around it because it sounds like, ‘Oh, you don’t want to give me any money and we’re getting married,’ and that’s what I feel like the public thinks about it.”

Working on it together made it easier

“Something that really helped us was, the minute we got engaged, we were working on it,” Kelly said. “Because I told him, ‘I don’t want to get near the wedding. I don’t want to have to think about it.’ Again, at this moment I had such a negative feeling about it.

“And I knew that I loved this man and he loved me. This is what had to happen. And that’s totally fine. But now looking at it as I’ve gotten older I’m going yeah like why wouldn’t you do it?”

Kelly and Matthew Stafford, who met while both were attending the University of Georgia, got married in 2015, well after he had begun playing in the NFL. He had already earned over $90 million when they were wed. By the end of his current contract, he will have earned over $448 million.
