More than two dozen high school football players will be suspended for their roles in the nasty brawl between Ballard and Fern Creek in Kentucky. If we’re being honest, the total amount of suspensions likely could’ve (and maybe should’ve) been more.

It was an ugly scene!

Not only did the high school football game end early, the incident had a direct impact on this coming weekend. Both teams will be without at least 12 players during the first week of district play.

Ballard defeated Fern Creek during the shortened high school football game.

The high school football game between Fern Creek and Ballard was actually supposed to be played in full on Sept. 18. It was stopped at the 5:50 mark of the first quarter due to weather and postponed to this past weekend when both teams were off.

Ballard High School is located in Louisville, Kentucky. Established in 1968, it enrolls approximately 2,000 students in Grades 9-12. Fern Creek High School is also located in Louisville. Established in 1923, it enrolls approximately 1,500 students in Grades 9-12.

Both high school football programs compete in Class 6A of the Kentucky High School Athletic Association. The Bruins in District 5, the Tigers in District 4. They picked back up in the first quarter, with the score tied at 0-0, on Thursday.

Ballard held a 28-0 lead over Fern Creek with 5:11 remaining in the fourth quarter when chaos ensued. The game was ultimately called early due to a bench-clearing brawl. It does not go down as a complete game. It does count as a win for the Bruins.

26 players were suspended for the brawl.

The unfortunate incident occurred after the whistle when a Ballard player got tangled up with a Fern Creek player. The former proceeded to rip the helmet off of the latter and started throwing hands. That did not go over well with either side.

Multiple players from both teams left their respective sidelines and got involved. What started as some initial pushing and shoving very quickly turned violent. Punches were thrown and players were kicked. Some of them were tackled to the ground.

Here is the broadcast video of the incident:

The Kentucky High School Athletic Association reviewed the footage earlier in the week. It ultimately handed down a one-game suspension to 26 players— 14 from the Bruins and 12 from the Tigers. The timing is not ideal.

Both high school football programs are set to begin district play on Friday. They will now be shorthanded and without some of their most important skill players.
