After pulling off a historic win against Paris Saint-Germain with his club Newcastle United, right-back Kieran Trippier woke up the next morning to find his son wearing a jersey in support of the other team.

Taking to Instagram on Thursday, the 33-year-old Trippier — who previously played for clubs such as Atletico Madrid, Tottenham Hotspur, and Burnley — shared a hilarious photo of his young son in an oversized Mbappe jersey, who is the star forward for PSG.

Given the dirt stain that can be seen on the white 7, it appears that the kit is the one Mbappe wore in Newcastle’s 4-1 win over the French giants.

This season is Newcastle’s first in the Champions League since the 2002/2003 season. Unfortunately, it isn’t all that much of a heartwarming Cinderella story as the club is a sports washing project that’s owned by Saudi Arabia. They also qualified for the Champions League during a season in which traditional powers like Liverpool, Chelsea, and Tottenham Hotspur all struggled.

Since joining Newcastle in 2022, Trippier has made 50 appearances for the club and has scored 3 goals. Trippier spent the previous three seasons in Spain with Atletico Madrid, where he became Atleti’s first English player in 95 years.

Trippier has made his most appearances for Tottenham (69, scoring 2 goals) and Burnley (145, 4 goals), and also has 43 senior caps for the England National Team.

Trippier started in England’s World Cup semifinal match against Croatia in 2018 (he opened the scoring with an incredible free kick) and the team’s appearance in the 2020 Euro Final against Italy, both of which were losses.

Following the win over Paris Saint-Germain,  Newcastle now sit atop Group F — which was touted as being the “group of death” — with four points after two games. In addition to PSG, Germany club Borussia Dortmund and Italian side AC Milan are also in the group.
