The Atlanta Falcons shocked the NFL world and even had their franchise quarterback scratching his head.

On Thursday night, the Falcons shockingly drafted Washington QB Michael Penix Jr. with the eighth pick in the NFL draft.

Fans were not sure what the Falcons were thinking with the pick, considering the team had just signed Kirk Cousins to a four-year, $180 million contract with $100 million guaranteed.

According to The Athletic’s Dianna Russini Cousins was “stunned” by the Falcons already picking his successor in the draft months after signing him to take the reins at QB.

“The Falcons called Kirk Cousins when they were on the clock to let him know.
From what I learned, Cousins understood a QB would be considered but he did not believe his successor would be taken in the first round. I’m told he’s a bit stunned.”

NFL Network’s Daniel Jeremiah confirmed Russinni’s report and revealed that Cousins wasn’t really given much of a heads up on the team picking Penix.
