Kirk Herbstreit received backlash for recent comments made about last weekend in college football. He attempted to clarify those remarks after the fact.
The media personality provided an explanation to his following. That came only after being dunked on by the Naval Academy.
Herbstreit spoke Monday with co-host Joey Galloway on his Nonstop podcast. The most recent episode began with a rundown of college football happenings.
That included the Heisman trophy ceremony and College Football Playoff outlook. It did not initially mention the actual football played the previous Saturday.
Herbstreit then posted a video of those introductory comments to X (formerly Twitter) alongside a caption that read, “Not having college football threw us for a loop.”
Kirk Herbstreit deleted his tweet.
Many in the comments section were quick to point out that there was, in fact, college football on Saturday. That included a pair of bowl games and the FCS playoffs.
The day was headlined, however, by the annual Army-Navy matchup. That outing drew nearly 8 million viewers, making it CBS’s most-watched game of the year.
Herbstreit received immediate backlash for his omission of college football’s best rivalry game. The Midshipmen piled on with some shade of their own.

The Navy football program reposted Kirk Herbstreit’s video with a picture from its 17-16 victory over Army. The Midshipmen reiterated that actual football was played.
It might’ve been the tipping point as the college football personality later removed his tweet from the timeline.
Herbstreit explained the now-deleted post.
Just wanted to address a mistake that we made on my socials earlier this week related to last weekends CFB Saturday. We posted a video where @Joey_Galloway and I were talking about how strange it was to be home and not traveling on a CFB weekend since end of August and how we… pic.twitter.com/Vb4k4jeJQS

He posted a follow-up to the criticism with clarity on the situation. He apologized for the “mistake made on socials,” noting that the caption missed the mark.
Herbstreit then explained that he and Galloway were referencing a weekend off from college football travel.
Herbstreit is constantly on the move during football season. He has both college and NFL responsibilities. His weekends are filled with non-stop flights, hence the podcast name.
Was the apology necessary? Probably not. Most could put two and two together when listening to the actual conversation.
Given the response, particularly that of the Navy football team, he opted to backtrack. He might be a bit more careful when posting his next clip.
