It’s been close to five years since we were treated to the inaugural version of “The Match,” which featured Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson going head-to-head at Shadow Creek Golf Course in Las Vegas for the $9 million prize Lefty eventually secured.
That event has evolved over the years, as we were treated to a handful of iterations that saw pro golfers teamed up with other professional athletes before the format shifted a bit with The Match VI, which featured Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers facing off against a team comprised of Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes.
On Thursday night, “The Match VIII” kicked off at Wynn Golf Club featuring two teams of teammates in the form of Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce and Steph Curry and Klay Thompsom.
Anyone who’s familiar with Curry’s stellar golf game knew he was far and away the most talented player of the bunch, but it was still a somewhat even showdown when you consider Thompson was the weakest with a handicap of 15 (Kelce is reportedly an 11, while Mahomes clocks in at around an 8).
It’s safe to say Thompson cemented that reputation thanks to what unfolded on the 9th hole, where he was hoping for a solid drive that would allow him and Curry to crawl out of the four-hole deficit they were facing at the time.
Unfortunately for him, it turned out to be anything but that, as Thompson shanked his tee shot to the right.
However, it was even more unfortunate for an unsuspecting spectator who apparently didn’t hear Thompson yell out “FORE!” after botching the drive, as a camera caught them collapsing to the ground after getting struck by the ball before the broadcast cut back to a very amused Curry and Draymond Green (thankfully, it appears the person in question wasn’t seriously injured).

That was the roughest part of a fairly rough day for Thompson, as Kelce and Mahomes ultimately walked away with the 3&2 victory.

While that loss may sting, the feeling has nothing on what the person it drilled had to deal with.
