Lafayette defeated Eureka to win the high school baseball district championship in Missouri. However, the game ended with a controversy on the final out.

The umpiring crew called base runner interference.

Even if it was the correct decision and likely did not impact the outcome, it is still a bummer to see a high school baseball playoff game end like this. What if the comeback was on?!

Lafayette defeated Eureka.

Lafayette High School is located in Wildwood, Missouri. Established in 1960, it enrolls approximately 1,700 students in Grades 9-12. Eureka High School is located in Eureka, Missouri. Established in 1908, it enrolls approximately 1,900 students in Grades 9-12.

Both schools compete in the Suburban West Conference in Class 6, District 2. The Lancers are ranked No. 13 in the state. the Wildcats are ranked No. 1. They met in the district championship game on Friday.

Lafayette jumped out to an early lead with two runs in the second inning. It did not give back the lead. Eureka loaded the bases on two walks and a hit by pitch in the bottom of the fourth but it could only score one run and left two runners on base.

The Lancers extended their lead with two more runs in the top of the fifth.

The Wildcats put two runners on base with nobody out in the bottom half of the fifth. And then the next three hitters all popped out to end the inning and strand the scoring opportunity.

Eureka could not mount a comeback. In the end, it was Lafayette that only allowed one run on four hits to claim victory.

The Lancers will advance to the state quarterfinals. They will host Vianney in a best-of-three series.

The final out of the game creates high school baseball controversy.

Although the Wildcats were unable to get anything going on offense, they had a chance to start a rally in the bottom of the seventh. High school baseball plays only seven innings.

Eureka had runners on first and third with only one out. A ground ball to the left side forced the Lafayette shortstop to make a split decision. He decided to try and turn the double play to end the game and flipped the ball to second base for out number one. The second baseman could not complete the turn for out number two.

As a result, the run scored. It was 4-2 with two outs in the final half inning.

However, the umpires decided that the base runner did not make an attempt to get out of the way of the throw at second base or to slide. They ruled runner interference. Game over.

Here is how it went down in real time:

Was it the correct call? That is not for me to say. I would actually lean in favor of the interference ruling, but I struggle with that being the final out of the game. Just a brutal way for it to end.

The Lancers likely would’ve shut the door anyway, because the Wildcats failed to get a big hit with runners on base throughout the entire game, but we will never know. An interference call was made.
