65-Year-Old Lawrence Taylor On The Current Giants: I Can ‘Play Better Than These Guys’

The New York Giants got completely dismantled in the first week of the NFL season by the Minnesota Vikings.

Unfortunately, the 28-6 drubbing took place in front of the Giants’ top 100 players who were on hand to celebrate the team’s 100th season of playing football (in uniforms that many wished had remained in the past).

Among those top 100 New York Giants players was former linebackers Carl Banks and Lawrence Taylor.

During the game, while watching Sam Darnold carve up the Giants’ secondary for 208 yards and two touchdowns on 19-of-24 passing, and seeing Aaron Jones rush for 94 yards with an average of 6.7 yards per carry, Taylor expressed his disgust to Banks.

On Monday’s Bleav in Giants podcast, Banks told Bob Papa, “I can tell you when we were lining up to be introduced as the top 100 players, a guy who never really comments on games because he doesn’t watch many of them was Lawrence Taylor. He looked at me and, this is a true story, folks. If you want to know what we were thinking at halftime.

“Lawrence looked at me at halftime and said, ‘Carl, I could pick 22 of us right now and go out and play better than these guys. We’d be in this game.’ The youngest guy in that line was probably 50 years old. Lawrence Taylor looked at me and said, ‘I can get 22 of us right now and go out there right now and whoop these guys’ a–.’”

Taylor, ranked number one of the all-time greatest Giants honored on Sunday, is 65-years-old.

That being said, Lawrence Taylor did win a NFL Most Valuable Player Award, was a three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year, a two-time UPI NFC Player of the Year, and was voted on to the NFL’s 100th Anniversary All-Time Team.

Plus, the Giants gave up an average of 6.1 yards per play on Sunday to a journeyman quarterback and Giants fans are already pretty much done with their quarterback Daniel Jones. So maybe he isn’t wrong.
