Lehigh University won its college baseball game against Coppin State by a final score of 38-6. The Mountain Hawks scored 20 runs in the top of the first inning.
They did so on only three hits.
Unfortunately, this unusual college baseball box score reflects more on the Eagles than it does on the eventual victors. Their pitching staff had a brutal day at the office.
Lehigh dominated Coppin State.
Neither Lehigh nor Coppin State are very good this season. The Mountain Hawks currently rank second-to-last place in the Patriot League at 4-12 with an overall record of 10-24. The Eagles sit fourth-to-last in the NEC at 7-11 with an overall record of 7-24.
Lehigh is located in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. It for some reason traveled 150 miles south to play a midweek game at Coppin State in Baltimore, Maryland on Tuesday afternoon.
The visitors won by 32 runs. They played only seven innings.
Lehigh scored 20 runs in the first inning, two runs in the second and third, seven runs in the fourth, one run in the fifth and sixth and five runs in the seventh. The game was ultimately called early by run rule to allow the Mountain Hawks to travel back home. There was no need to continue with the blowout. It was already over after just one half inning.
Believe it or not, the numbers — outside of runs and walks — were fairly even.

It was the walks and hit by pitches that proved to be the difference.
The Mountain Hawks set college baseball records.
Lehigh sent 20 runs across the plate in the top of the first inning, which broke the D-I record set over 50 years ago. Senior Aidan Quinn drew seven walks in the game, which broke the D-I record for most walks drawn by a single player in a game. The Mountain Hawks also scored 38 runs, which broke the Patriot League record for most runs ever scored in a game. Three records in one game!

WHEW. That sequence reminds me of that one episode of Bugs Bunny.
Lehigh made college baseball history in its win over Coppin State. It really doesn’t get any more demoralizing than a 20-run first inning on three hits.
