The Messi-Ronaldo rivalry has taken a hit in recent days. It started with Lionel Messi, one of the greatest soccer players in history, completely pooping the bed during the 2018 FIFA World Cup. Then, Argentina barely advanced out of the Group Stage.
This was all happening while Cristiano Ronaldo dropped a hat-trick against Spain in his first game of the tournament. Days later, after both Messi and Ronaldo had been sent home, Cristiano announced he was leaving Real Madrid and signing with Juventus in Turin, Italy. This means we no longer get the Messi-Ronaldo El Classico matchups in La Liga.
While that rivalry was taking a beating so was a relationship in Russia. A diehard Messi-Barcelona fan left his wife (a Madrid-Ronaldo fan) of 14 years after she repeatedly shit talked Messi’s piss poor performance throughout the 2018 FIFA World Cup, according to the Daily Mail:
He said that he and his wife regularly joke with one another about Messi and Ronaldo – but this World Cup provided ‘the last straw.’
Arsen said Argentina’s disappointing debut during the World Cup this year led to his wife mocking the player’s performance. He ignored her – but when he was celebrating Messi’s goal against Nigeria, he snapped when his wife began mocking the star player again.
‘From the very beginning of the World Cup, Lyudmila constantly mocked me and my beloved player, saying that he played poorly and couldn’t even score an important penalty in the game with Iceland,’ he told the newspaper.
He said he was extremely worried for Argentina during the game against Nigeria. ‘When she once again started speaking unkindly about Lionel and his performance, I got angry and, in turn, expressed everything I thought of her handsome Ronaldo, the Portugese national team, herself and all the other clubs Lyudmila is crazy about.
‘Then I took all my things and left her for good.’ The following day, he filed for divorce. (via)
I can’t even wrap my mind around this. She mocked everything he held dear. His idol. He let his 14-year marriage fall apart and he filed divorce, all when he could’ve just admitted to himself that Cristiano Ronaldo is the far superior player and Real Madrid is the better team. He threw this life away when he would’ve been a happier man just becoming a Madrid fan, and it would’ve been the smarter choice all along. Such a shame.
