LSU men's basketball coach Will Wade over question marks
There’s less than a month and a half to go before the men’s basketball team at LSU kicks off its season. However, the Tigers are facing some existential uncertainty when you consider it can’t field a starting five based on the number of players who are officially listed on its roster as things currently stand.
The football team at LSU sparked a dramatic saga prior to the start of the current season after it attempted to add two players who had previously signed with NFL teams to its roster, a move that led to the SEC threatening to expel the entire school from the conference before the university waved the white flag.
Its men’s basketball team is also facing some issues on the eligibility front as Will Wade gears up for his grand return. The head coach made some bold gambles as he attempted to overhaul the roster, and they’ve placed the program in legal limbo with the new campaign on the horizon.
LSU’s men’s basketball team only has four players who are officially eligible to play during the 2025-26 season
Wade previously served as the head coach of the Tigers from 2017 to 2022 before he was fired following an NCAA investigation into recruiting violations; he posted a 105-51 record during his time at the helm while leading the team to three NCAA Tournament appearances.
His replacement, Matt McMahon, ended up being a massive downgrade during a fairly disastrous four-year stint. The 2023-24 season marked the only time they posted a winning record under his watch, and he ultimately went 60-70 (and 17-55 in conference play).
Wade spent that period leading McNeese to back-to-back March Madness bids before securing a spot in the First Four at NC State last season, and he was rehired to replace McMahon after the Wolfpack were eliminated.
Every men’s basketball team is allowed to have 15 players on its roster, but as things currently stand, the number of guys currently listed on LSU’s sits at…four.
That’s reflective of the eligibility issues the team is currently grappling with due to NCAA rules that have led to some major uncertainty over potential violations.
One of the biggest questions involves RJ Luis Jr., who was named Big East Player of the Year at St. John’s in 2025 and signed a two-way contract with the Celtics before deciding to return to college. He received an injunction to play, but it was seemingly nullified by the rules the SEC rolled out over the aforementioned LSU football drama.
There’s also Donovan Dent and Skyy Clark, two UCLA transfers who were part of a lawsuit challenging the NCAA’s “five-for-five” rule. A court in California gave them the green light, but their status is still up in the air.
There are also international prospects whose status is questionable due to their previous association with pro teams in other countries: Márcio Santos, Michael Ruzic, Brice Dessert, Saliou Niang, and Gilad Levy,
There’s currently no firm timeline when it comes to their eligibility status, and it’s hard to imagine LSU has a viable contingency plan if a worst-case scenario unfolds. As a result, this will certainly be worth keeping an eye on as the season approaches.
