It was hard to blame Mavericks fans for being absolutely devastated after they learned the team traded Luka Doncic to the Lakers. More than a few people in the Dallas area literally shed some tears after hearing about the news, and that apparently includes the wife of Cowboys owner Jerry Jones.

By now, there’s not much to say about the trade that saw the Mavericks part ways with Luka Doncic that hasn’t already been said by the countless reporters, talking heads, and NBA fans who’ve spent months processing, unpacking, and debating the virtually unprecedented deal that led to the team shipping off its franchise player in the middle of the season.

We’ve recently been treated to a fresh new round of Discourse courtesy of the man at the center of the trade (who is still using the phone he shattered out of anger after learning he’d be dealt) as well as Mavericks GM Nico Harrison, who somehow managed to find more room to shove his foot even further into his mouth during the press conference he held on Monday while once again attempting to justify what seems poised to be an absolutely disastrous decision.

On Tuesday, Jerry Jones held a press conference of his own as the Cowboys gear up for this week’s NFL Draft, and he got to chime in on the Luka trade when a reporter asked him about his thoughts on the move and the ensuing fallout.

Jones said he got to know Doncic during his time in Dallas and implied his “personal friend” has an open invitation to come back to the city to attend a Cowboys game any time he likes.

He added he’s a bit too busy with the Cowboys to get overly invested in the personnel decisions the Mavericks make but noted the trade took a particular rough toll on his wife Gene, saying:

“I’m a big fan of the Mavericks and consequently a big fan of Luka. The world knows that I’ve got my hands full with what we think about over here; I look at the Mavericks through a very much entertainment eye…

Now Gene was All-State, scored 17 straight free throws in the championship game, and Gene lives and dies with that basketball team. She just cried when Luka left.”

I hope Nico is happy, because Gene certainly isn’t.
