Disney released the first trailer for the upcoming Star Wars movie The Mandalorian & Grogu, marking the franchise’s first cinematic outing since 2019’s much-maligned The Rise of Skywalker. The first reactions to the Mando trailer, however, suggest fans are longing for the days of Episode 9.

While the first two seasons of The Mandalorian were virtually uniformly beloved by fans, the third season — and subsequent Disney+ Star Wars series sans Andor — resulted in a massive drop in enthusiasm that’s undoubtedly carried over into the release of The Mandalorian & Grogu.

Star Wars fans are mourning the franchise following the release of the trailer for The Mandalorian & Grogu

Following the release of the first trailer for The Mandalorian & Grogu, Star Wars fans took to social media to essentially mourn the franchise, feeling as though the upcoming film lacks both an exciting premise and compelling visuals.

Below are just some of the many viral reactions to the trailer on social media.

“Bravo Jon Favreau, you made the first ugly looking Star Wars movie after a 48 year streak. Incredible achievement.”

“Exciting! We are finally getting our first straight to DVD Star Wars movie.”

“Not even fan of Jon Favreau and it still amazes me how much he has regressed as a director.”

“The way they made the AT-AT slowly falling off a cliff the big final moment of the trailer before the title reveal is just laughable. I had low expectations, but that’s where it really hit me that this film is going to feel like random episodes of the show stitched together.”

“A lot of this looks like campy, adventure of the week kind of fun and I always loved that about The Mandalorian, but it’s genuinely baffling how bad this is from a visual standpoint. Already one of the ugliest looking movies of 2026.”

“They had the opportunity make a beautiful space western set in the Star Wars universe and they cooked up abysmal dogs– instead. Movie made for the sole purpose of selling more Grogu toys.”

Here is the official synopsis for The Mandalorian & Grogu, which will be released in theaters on May 22, 2026, via Lucasfilm:

“The evil Empire has fallen, and Imperial warlords remain scattered throughout the galaxy. As the fledgling New Republic works to protect everything the Rebellion fought for, they have enlisted the help of legendary Mandalorian bounty hunter Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and his young apprentice Grogu.”

Alongside Pedro Pascal as Din Djarin/The Mandalorian (although he barely speaks in the trailer and there is no guarantee he ever takes his mask off), The Mandalorian & Grogu is also set to star Sigourney Weaver, Jeremy Allen White (in a voice/motion-capture role), and Jonny Coyne.
