Mark Matthews got a little bit too excited during his college football commitment ceremony. The Florida high school football star violently rejected his own school amid the performative antics.
It presents a stark contrast to a hilarious mishap during a similar announcement just a few days prior.
The “pump fake” has become extremely common for college football commitments. This latest occurrence ended up causing more confusion than necessary.
Who is Mark Matthews?
At ~6-foot-5, 300 pounds, Matthews ranks as the No. 1 offensive tackle prospect in the recruiting Class of 2027 and the No. 3 player overall. He plays for St. Thomas Aquinas as the top-ranked player in Florida.
Mark Matthews is likely to face an adjustment period on the next level because he only started playing football as a freshman in high school and only moved to the offensive side of the ball in the last two years. Even still, he projects as a multi-year starter for a College Football Playoff contender. Do not be surprised if he one day hears his name called as first-round NFL Draft pick!
Matthews moves with excellent balance and posture for someone of his size. His bend is unbelievable, as demonstrated by his limbo abilities.
His tape also speaks for itself:
The freakish athleticism is what stands out about Matthews. As a result, he received 41 scholarship offers from all over the country. It ultimately came down to Texas A&M and Miami.
The nearby Hurricanes were long considered the favorites to land his commitment. The Aggies surged down the stretch and they ultimately received his commitment on Friday evening. Things can still change, because the early signing period will not officially open until December, but it seems like Matthews is 100% set on playing in College Station.
A tale of two college football commitment ceremonies.
Mark Matthews announced his college decision in front of friends and family on the campus of St. Thomas Aquinas. It was quite the rollercoaster of emotions.
The monstrous offensive lineman sat at a table with three hats in front of him: Miami, Georgia, A&M. He initially put his hand on the Bulldogs cap. And then he grabbed the Hurricanes cap and lifted it off of the table. And then put it right back down, picked up the Aggies cap and put it on his head.
Matthews proceeded to launch the Texas A&M hat in emphatic fashion. “GET THAT S— OUT OF HERE!”
I think he lost track of which hat was where. I think he meant to throw the Georgia hat…
Matthews reached back over to the Miami hat and screamed “YEAH!!!!” before he realized his mistake. “Oh, I’m sorry y’all.” He threw the Hurricanes hat back on the table and took off his sweatshirt to reveal the Texas A&M jersey. His mom handed him a cowboy hat to put on his head to make it official.

The chaotic commitment ceremony presents a stark contrast to the commitment of four-star wide receiver Quentin Burrell. In an era of pump-fakes and trickery, Burrell grabbed the wrong hat by accident while committing to Michigan. It was not on purpose. It was an honest mistake.

Matthews was excited to announce his decision. Can you blame him? I would imagine he also made a lot of money in the process! Unfortunately, it ended up being the most confusing and performative ceremony we have seen in quite some time.
