Former Panthers Coach Matt Rhule Is Back Coaching, But Not Football

Nebraska made what many thought was a home run hire when they hired Matt Rhule. After all, the fired Panthers coach was excellent as the head coach at Baylor and Temple.

There’s no reason to think he can’t turn Nebraska into a power again. It’s an easier rebuild that Temple and Baylor were.

But, college football has changed a lot since Rhule left Baylor in 2019. The transfer portal is much more prevalent now. And, players having Name, Image, and Likeness rights is something that was not around when he was last coaching in the college ranks.

And, those two things have completely changed how head coaches have to operate. Their job is more similar to the job of an NFL GM now. It’s very important to keep their current players happy and paid, while making sure they can recruit well, also. It’s a constant balancing act between the present and the future. And, a lot of the recruiting is done behind the scenes by parties not necessarily employed by the school but associated with various NIL collectives. That takes it out Rhule’s and other coaches’ control. And, for a group of people that love control, that is not pleasant.

Of course, Rhule just got hired a few weeks ago, and he has had limited time to put a class together at Nebraska. He’s been involved in a lot of recruiting and transfer portal battles in a short amount of time.

And, apparently, he’s had enough of certain programs.

Matt Rhule sent out a tweet that took a shot at Miami at Oregon

Late Monday night, the coach tweeted this out.

Whoa. That is a shot right across the bow of those two schools. I think he is accusing them of making false NIL promises, given the emojis.

That’s quite the accusation, even if I think it’s probably true. Just another episode of the wild and crazy world of college football.
