The early 2000s was a wild time for RomComs in Hollywood and nobody was getting more calls to star in outlandish films than Matthew McConaughey who was pumping out multiple romantic comedies every year and named ‘Sexiest Man’ in 2005 after a string of hits. That string of hits included 2002’s Tiptoes where Matthew McConaughey and his girlfriend went home to meet the family and he had to reveal a secret to them.

The secret was… his entire family were little people. This is an outrageous premise for a film. That he would keep his life a secret from the woman he was about to have a baby with. In the film he is his normal self, Matthew McConaughey, but everyone else in his family is a little person. Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones) was actually in the film a year before he would appear in Elf and a year before his big break The Station Agent.

Matthew McConaughey seems to have blacked out his Tiptoes era but during a recent appearance on YMH with Tom Segura and Bert Kreischer, Tom brought it up and showed Matthew McConaughey the Tiptoes trailer for his first time. How it’s possible that Matthew has *never* seen the trailer for his own film seems wild but he dies laughing watching the trailer and going down memory lane:

Here is the full interview, the video should start at the 52:28 mark where they start discussing the trailer. There’s also a YT Shorts below:

Let’s look at Matthew McConaughey’s RomCom credits in the 2000s:

2001: The Wedding Planner
2002: Tiptoes
2003: How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days
2005: Sahara
2006: Failure to Launch
2008: Fool’s Gold, Surfer, Dude,
2009: Ghosts of Girlfriends Past

Somehow, some way, Matthew McConaughey was single-handedly responsible for keeping the Romantic Comedy genre alive through the 2000s but also responsible for killing the genre for a decade. Hollywood road his box office success with boomers until they ran out of ideas for movies and starting churning out complete garbage. And honestly, it was a great thing for Tiptoes star Matthew McConaughey because it enabled him to become a series actor once again.

McConaughey is an Oscar winner for Dallas Buyers Club. He has proven his acting chops countless times over throughout the years… In addition to being one of the most interesting men alive. But he got typecast as ‘RomCom guy’ and churned out films like Tiptoes that Hollywood wouldn’t touch with 10ft pole these days. It’s an incredible career arc.
