Matthew Stafford just had a dream season. After years of suffering through disappointing year after disappointing year with the Detroit Lions, Stafford was traded to the LA Rams and quickly made the change of scenery count.

Stafford had a monster first season in LA, putting up nearly 4900 yards and 41 touchdowns as he led the Rams to a Super Bowl. However, it turns out that the last year in the NFL could have been very different.

According to NFL insider Peter Schrager, Stafford was open to being traded to the Indianapolis Colts, but they weren’t willing to pay up for him.

This has to be tough for Colts fans to hear as they currently don’t have a starting quarterback after choosing to trade a 1st round pick for Carson Wentz instead of probably 2 2st rounders for Stafford. They then proceeded to give up on Wentz after one season and trade him for a 2nd and a 3rd rounder.

At this point, Stafford must be ecstatic the Colts didn’t pay up for him. The Colts would have had a better season with Stafford than they did with Wentz, but it seems unlikely Stafford would have a ring right now if he went to Indy.

The situation was just much better in LA. The Rams already boasted one of the NFL’s best defenses and one its best wide receiver duos when Stafford joined.

In the end, things worked out perfectly for Stafford and the Colts hopefully learned a valuable lesson about doing whatever you must to get it right at the quarterback position.
