Melvin Gordon Says A Not So Smart Thing, Explains He’s An Average RB Without A Good Offensive Line

Melvin Gordon recently signed a two-year, $16 million contract with the Broncos, but according to Gordon himself, maybe that wasn’t a smart move by Denver.

The 26-year-old accidentally made a really strong case that teams shouldn’t invest any sort of big-time money into the running back position when he was asked about the chip on his shoulder heading into this year.

Gordon essentially said that he’s average when there isn’t a good offensive line in front of him.

“I just feel like a lot of people just doubt my talent as a back,” Gordon explained to Nicki Jhabvala of The Athletic. “Just during the holdout, a lot of people were saying, ‘Oh, he’s an average back, he’s not this, he’s not that.’ Just this year, people are like, ‘well, he’s not the back that he was.’ No one takes into account that I didn’t have my center or I didn’t have my left tackle and that we had guys that were hurt and just in and out. And I didn’t have really my startine linemen. My best linemen, I didn’t have. No one cares about that, and nor should they.”

“You have some players that are in my position where they don’t care if you have a good line, or if your line is hurt or not. You’re not what you are. You’re an average player.”

Gordon’s statement isn’t necessarily wrong because a good offensive line certainly makes a running back’s job easier, but it’s still a very questionable thing to say.

His quote is a huge boost to offensive linemen around the NFL and supports the idea that teams should invest in that position instead of his own.

Big time whoops.
