If you started training right now, do you think you could become an Olympian in time for the 2028 Olympics? It doesn’t matter what sport you choose. Could you do it?
A new survey finds that 38% of men believe they could actually become Olympians by 2028 if they started training today. (That number probably includes the delusional 33% who thought they could score a World Cup-winning penalty kick if given the chance awhile back.)
In a survey of 2,000 adults, almost four out of ten (38%) men said they are confident they could meet the requirements to qualify for the Olympic Games in Los Angeles with some expert coaching and a rigorous training regimen.
Additionally, slightly more than a quarter of individuals (26%) think they have a good chance of defeating a professional in their sport if they were given the opportunity, the Mirror reports.
11% said tennis would be their best chance to make the Olympics, while 17% believed soccer would give them the best chance to become an Olympian. Six percent believed they could qualify in cycling.
Men really are delusional about their sports abilities
Also, proving just how truly delusional many men are, even though 20% of males have never tried it, 13% believe they could sprint 100 meters in under 15 seconds.
According to the poll, about half (49%) of women think they are poorer than average in general sports ability, while 38% of men think they are better than average. Nearly half (49%) of men also believe they are better-than-average drivers, and 23% think they could beat a professional rally driver.
The poll, commissioned by Vauxhall to mark its partnership with Team GB, also found that gymnastics, according to nearly half (45%) of all people, would be the hardest Olympic sport to master, followed by diving (33%).
“It’s inspiring to see the confidence people have in their own potential – even if it may be blind faith – and the enthusiasm generated by one of the world’s greatest sporting events,” said Eurig Druce, managing director at Vauxhall.
