In his first two years with the Miami Dolphins, Tua Tagovailoa hasn’t exactly lived up to the hype he had coming out of Alabama. Still, based on the way the Dolphins have handled this offseason, it seemed like they still had plenty of confidence in the young QB.

However, that might not be the case. This week, Dolphins GM Chris Grier was asked if Tua can be an elite quarterback. His answer didn’t exactly express much confidence in his franchise QB.

There are many reasons why this is not an answer you’d expect to hear from Grier on this question. You’d generally expect to hear a more positive response from a GM talking about their franchise QB. It would have been pretty easy for him to do it. It’s not like he was asked “do you think Tua is an elite QB?”

He was just asked if Tua could become one, to which he could have easily just said “yes”.

It’s also strange to see him answer a question like this without much confidence. Reports this offseason seemed to indicate that the Dolphins essentially chose Tua over Brian Flores. That doesn’t feel like a move you make for a QB you aren’t confident in.

The answer to this question might also actually be “yes”. Tua didn’t exactly put up superstar numbers this year, but he at least gave us reason to believe he’s improving. Tua’s supporting cast was suspect at best. Will Fuller barely played this year. Devante Parker was injured throughout the year. His only real constants were Mike Gesicki and a rookie Jaylen Waddle.

Tua also dealt with injuries of his own and still managed to put them within a game of the playoffs while improving in completion percentage and yards per attempt. It’s not enough that I would say he can be elite, but it probably should’ve been enough for the Dolphins’ GM to say.
