Over the years, Big Ten Basketball has not been known for having a bunch of high-flying, high-scoring teams. The reputation of the conference is that it’s a plodding league that favors teams who can slow it down and execute in the half court.
On Monday night, Michigan and Nebraska did absolutely nothing to dispel that notion. Neither team could even get to 50 points for the entire game as Michigan beat Nebraska, 49-46.
Monday’s crucial matchup between a bubble team in Nebraska and a team fighting for a high seed in the NCAA Tournament in Michigan was expected to be relatively low-scoring. According to KenPom, both teams came in with significantly better defenses than offenses this year. But, no one could’ve predicted just how dreadful this offensive display would be.
49-46 is an exceptionally bad final score, and the stats are somehow even worse than the score suggests. The two teams were a combined 34/123 from the field, good for 27.6%. The stats from three-point range were even worse. Michigan was 5/27, and Nebraska was 6/28 for a remarkable 11/55 combined, good for 20%. The worst three-point shooting team this year, Cal State Fullerton, is shooting 27.08% from deep. That shows you how bad the shooting was. Even free throw shooting wasn’t great, as the two teams combined to go just 16/25 from the free-throw line. Ironically, turnovers weren’t really that big of a problem, as the two teams combined for 25. That might be a tad high, but isn’t egregious like the shooting percentages were.
Michigan: 0.71 points per possession
Nebraska: 0.67 points per possessionThe first Division I game all season in which both teams scored under 0.75 points per possession.

Someone out there watched college basketball for the first time tonight.
That person is never watching college basketball again. Thanks Michigan.

Unfortunately for Nebraska, they let a golden opportunity to get a huge Q1 win and help their bubble case slip through their fingers.
