Mike Elko pleased Texas fans at SEC Media Days.
The Texas A&M football program’s trophy case is lacking. Any Texas Longhorn will be the first to point it out.
Mike Elko validated his rival fanbase at SEC Media Days. He’s using history as motivation.
The Aggies have no hardware over the last three decades outside of a Big 12 title in 1998. The program won a 1939 national championship. It has a shared national title in 1919. There were positive runs as Southwest Conference members, but the school has been largely mediocre since.
As a South Carolina Gamecock, I know the feeling all too well. The season begins with hype. By its conclusion, “Next year is our year” talk begins.
The Aggies have long played second fiddle to the Longhorns, who have a much richer history of success. Between 1999 and 2024, Texas A&M posted double digit wins in one season. They’ve lost four games or more 24 times in that span.
As a result, the phrase ‘8-4’ is often thrown around as trash talk in the Lone Star State. Elko recognizes that fact and is using it as motivation.

Mike Elko was asked how he keeps Texas A&M from becoming satisfied…

Texas A&M flipped the script in 2025, winning 11 games. A season-ending loss to Texas did not impact their College Football Playoff entry.
Elko was asked about complacency after the big year. He does not want to let the foot off the pedal. He referenced the empty trophy case as a way of keeping the positive momentum.
“I show (players) our trophy case and it’s empty,” he said when asked about motivation. “I think they’re all very aware of that… We’re happy with the direction of our program, but it’s not lost on us that we haven’t won the hardware that we’re searching for.”
As you can expect, Texas fans came out of the woodworks to comment on the remark.
He’s not lying. Some of us have been saying this for almost 3 decades. pic.twitter.com/zzNIRKhfCe

The self-awareness is evident.
Seems the HC is more self aware than his own fanbase! @tupapiindeed @BrentMills6378 @tengland_150 😂😂

Mike Elko is confident success will continue. He’s ensuring his players understand the mission. With that said, he validated the Longhorns’ trash talk with an admission of mediocrity.
Both programs will be considered frontrunners in the SEC this season. The Longhorns are viewed as the favorite. The Aggies are expected to finish Top 5 in the conference.
Elko wants to add some new hardware to the trophy case in 2026.
