Spending continues to increase in college football as schools attract top talent with lucrative NIL offers. No one is spending more than the Southeastern Conference.

Eleven SEC teams are featured among the 19 most expensive rosters in college football. That includes the nation’s top spender.

Money is the biggest factor in recruiting. It certainly played a role in the past, but now that player payment is legal, we have evidence.

Highly publicized bidding wars are not uncommon. Top players enter the transfer portal each offseason as leverage. General managers are being hired to discuss terms with agents. The landscape has completely changed, for better or worse.

While a “salary cap” was introduced through revenue sharing, it’s being circumvented by programs through the use of third-party partners. As a result, not everyone is on the same playing field.

With that said, the teams that spend the most often win the most. This year, 19 teams will drop more than $27 million for success.

Which College Football Team Has The Most Expensive Roster?

The NIL Standard is an “independent benchmark for what college football and men’s basketball players are worth.” It publishes valuations for teams and players by tracking reported deals while also projecting market values.

The site lists NIL values for each Power 4 football team in America. These totals are not all confirmed given the private nature of contract terms, but they are a best estimate.

Let’s start at No. 19 and work our way to the top.

19. Missouri Tigers

The Missouri Tigers boast the 19th-most expensive roster in college football at $27.3 million. The team’s top player is transfer signal caller Austin Simmons, who comes in from Ole Miss.

The Tigers will pay six players $1 million or more. They hope to build on an eight-win season from 2025.

18. Florida Gators

Florida is the second SEC team listed, coming in with an NIL valuation of $28.1 million. The Gators’ top player is transfer quarterback Aaron Philo who spent two years at Georgia Tech.

Six players are expected to make at least $1 million. Florida looks to improve upon a 4-8 season under first-year head coach Jon Sumrall.

17. Auburn Tigers

The third SEC team mentioned is the Auburn Tigers, another school with a new leader at the helm. Alex Golesh was hired from USF to replace Hugh Freeze. He brings with him a slew of fresh faces and a $29 million roster.

The most expensive player on the team is transfer QB Byrum Brown at $3 million. He is one of five players to eclipse the $1 million mark.

16. Georgia Bulldogs

Given recent success, you might expect Georgia to be higher on this list. Kirby Smart doesn’t have to spend as much as others to attain championships.

The Bulldogs sit in fertile recruiting grounds with a national name brand. A history of placing talent in the NFL helps sway players from chasing bags.

With that said, Georgia is one of 16 schools to spend more than $30 million. An estimated $2 million will go to top earner Gunner Stockton.

15. Oklahoma Sooners

Oklahoma comes in at No. 15 with an NIL valuation of $30.6 million. Starting quarterback John Mateer is set to receive a $3 million chunk of that total as the team’s priciest player.

The Sooners made the College Football Playoff in 2025 and hopes to get back. In order to do so, they’ve kept pace with others around the SEC.

14. Tennessee Vols

Tennessee rounds out a six-team run of SEC schools to start the list of most expensive college football rosters. The Vols’ are estimated to be spending $31 million.

Offensive lineman David Sanders Jr. will receive at least $1.7 million as the team’s top earner. That total might be even higher if rumors of his high school recruitment are true.

The Vols won eight games last year. They hope the investment gets them back in the College Football Playoff for a second time in three seasons.

13. Michigan Wolverines

The Michigan Wolverines are the first Big Ten team on this list, coming in at $31.3 million. Sophomore quarterback Bryce Underwood is the most expensive player on the roster at $3 million.

The Wolverines are in a season of transition following the firing of Sherrone Moore. He’s since been replaced by Utah’s Kyle Whittingham, who hopes to improve upon last year’s 9-4 output.

12. Alabama Crimson Tide

Back to the SEC, the Alabama Crimson Tide boast the fifth-most expensive college football roster in the league. Valued at $32.1 million, it comes in at 12th nationally.

The Tide’s top earner is Austin Mack at $2.24 million. He’s one of two Alabama QBs with $2 million salaries.

11. Texas A&M Aggies

The Texas A&M Aggies are estimated to be spending $33 million on their 2026 college football roster. The priciest player on the team is $3 million QB Marcel Reed.

The Aggies have 10 players valued at $1 million or more. The spending helped them retain key players from last year’s College Football Playoff squad.

10. Indiana Hoosiers

The Top 10 opens with the reigning national champion Indiana Hoosiers. Head coach Curt Cignetti hopes to build on success while defending his title.

That started with spending $33.1 million on the roster, headlined by $4 million QB Josh Hoover, a transfer tasked with replacing Fernando Mendoza.

9. Notre Dame Fighting Irish

Just up the road in South Bend, Indiana, Notre Dame sits at $34.9 million in roster spending. Heisman contender CJ Carr will receive $3 million of that total.

The Fighting Irish just missed the College Football Playoff in 2025. They expect the offseason investment to result in a bid this year.

8. Texas Tech Red Raiders

The ultimate villain of the NIL era, it’s no surprise to see Texas Tech crack the Top 10. The Red Raiders are willing to spend. This year’s roster is valued at $35 million.

The team’s most expensive player is offensive lineman Howard Sampson. He slid up into that top spot following the dramatic departure of $5 million QB Brendan Sorsby.

7. Ole Miss Rebels

Another college football team with a chaotic offseason, Ole Miss comes in at No. 7 on the list. The Rebels are estimated to be spending $35.1 million.

Pete Golding has replaced Lane Kiffin after a tumultuous exit. Recruiting controversies have followed.

Despite the noise, he’s been able to assemble a talented roster headlined by top earner Trinidad Chambliss at $6 million.

6. USC Trojans

The USC Trojans are the third Big Ten team to make the list, just missing out on a Top 5 spot nationally. Lincoln Riley is estimated to be spending $35.2 million on his current roster.

The Trojans’ most expensive player is starting QB Jayden Maiava at $2.5 million. He is one of 10 players expected to receive a salary of $1 million or more.

5. Ohio State Buckeyes

Consistently one of college football’s top spenders, the Ohio State Buckeyes boast one of the five most expensive rosters in 2026. It’s valued at $38.5 million, headlined by $5 million wide receiver Jeremiah Smith.

Ohio State’s spending has resulted in a national championship and back-to-back CFP appearances. Ryan Day hopes to keep the run going in the coming season.

4. Miami Hurricanes

Miami has spent big over the last few years, particularly on transfer quarterbacks. This season will be no different.

The Hurricanes own the most expensive roster in the ACC at $38.5 million. The top earner is signal caller Darian Mensah at $6.5 million, who broke contract with Duke to move to South Florida.

Mensah will replace Carson Beck who took the team to the national title game last year. The ‘Canes are eying a follow-up performance with a new passer under center.

3. LSU Tigers

LSU has the second-most expensive roster in the SEC. It is one of just three to eclipse the $40 million mark. Lane Kiffin made an investment early. He expects to win immediately.

That push highlighted by two high-priced transfer prospects in QB Sam Leavitt ($6M) and OL Jordan Seaton ($4M). The Tigers hope the spending results in a College Football Playoff appearance.

2. Oregon Ducks

Oregon is another school that often finds itself atop these spending lists. Support from Nike founder Phil Knight fuels the NIL program.

The Ducks feature a $42.2 million roster ahead of the 2026 season, headlined by veteran passer Dante Moore. He spurned a first-round NFL selection, and was paid handsomely to do so ($5 million).

Oregon is the top spender in the Big Ten.

1. Texas Longhorns

The Texas Longhorns own the most expensive roster in college football at $49.3 million. Arch Manning is one of 17 players expected to make at least $1 million.

Manning is valued at $6.8 million. Transfer wideout Cam Coleman follows at $3 million while Collin Simmons is the top defender at $2.5 million.

Texas has been close to winning championships of late. They’ve appeared in both SEC titles and the College Football Playoff. Steve Sarkisian hopes the added spending gets the Longhorns over the hump.
