The football world will be talking about the recent high-profile ‘roughing the passer’ calls in the NFL for quite some time. Sunday’s ‘roughing the passer’ flag thrown when Tom Brady was sacked by the Falcons was about as soft of a penalty as anyone has ever seen.
That controversial flag was followed up with a similar call on Kansas City star Chris Jones that had the NFL world fuming. And now college football quarterbacks are openly joking about how soft the NFL is and wishing they could get similar help and protection from the referees.
Nebraska Cornhuskers quarterback Casey Thompson joked on Tuesday that he needed ‘the Tom Brady rule’ last weekend when his team faced Rutgers. The Cornhuskers (3-3) just barely edged out the Rutgers Scarlet Knights (3-3) with Casey Thompson throwing for 2 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. Here’s what he had to say on Tuesday.
Nebraska QB Casey Thompson jokes about needing ‘Tom Brady rule’ and help from the refs like QBs are getting in the NFL

If that video isn’t working for you, Casey Thompson’s full quote is:
“I wish that I had the Tom Brady rule when we were playing against Rutgers on Friday. That would’ve been nice. If I would’ve had some Unsportsmanlike Conduct(s), some Roughing The Passer(s) against Rutgers… I dunno, the hit on Tom Brady (shrugs), I don’t know if it was roughing the passer but as a quarterback, you’ll take the flag, of course.”
Casey Thompson could certainly use a little bit of what he calls ‘the Tom Brady rule’, even if statistics actually debunk the myth that refs are soft on Tom Brady.
Casey has thrown for 1,497 yards over 6 games including 9 touchdowns and 6 interceptions but Nebraska is only 3-3on the season. So the Cornhuskers would use any extra help the zerbras are willing to give them.
