In a move aimed at shoring up their run defense, the New York Giants have signed veteran defensive tackle A’Shawn Robinson to a one-year deal worth up to $8 million, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

At 6-foot-4 and 330 pounds, Robinson is a formidable presence in the trenches. Robinson, who is considered to be one of the better run defenders in the league, is expected to bring stability and depth to the New York Giants’ defensive line.

Robinson was drafted by the Detroit Lions in the second round of the 2016 NFL Draft and spent four seasons with the team before being traded to the Los Angeles Rams in 2020. Over the course of his seven-year career, Robinson has played in 93 regular season games and recorded seven sacks, 20 tackles for a loss, and 20 quarterback hits.

The Giants, who finished 9-7-1 last season, and beat the Vikings in the wildcard round, have made improving their run defense a priority this offseason. They ranked 31st in the league in 2022, allowing 5.3 yards per rushing attempt. Earlier in free agency, the team signed veteran defensive tackle Rakeem Nunez-Roches in a bid to bolster their defensive line.

By signing Robinson, the Giants may have lessened their inclination to select a defensive lineman early in the 2023 NFL Draft.

The team currently holds the 2tth overall pick in the draft, which is set to begin on April 27th. However, with several other needs to address, including at offensive line and cornerback, the Giants may opt to use their top pick on another position.

Regardless of how the draft shakes out, the addition of Robinson figures to be somewhat significant one for the Giants. With his ability to clog up running lanes and disrupt opposing offensive lines, he could be a key piece in turning around the team’s fortunes in 2023.
