When the clock hit midnight on Saint Patrick’s Day, there was no way that the Fighting Irish were going to lose. Notre Dame, playing in the First Four of March Madness, battled Rutgers to a wild, back-and-forth double overtime win to reach the First Round of the NCAA Tournament.

The game began on Wednesday, March 16, and by the time the game went into overtime, and then double overtime, it was the early hours of Thursday, March 17. That, of course, is Saint Patrick’s Day.

It was the perfect amount of chaos to begin the best time of year in college basketball.

After the game, Notre Dame head coach Mike Brey offered an incredible interview with Jon Rothstein. Rothstein asked him where the game ranked in Brey’s career, and the 62-year-old (who is full of energy at all times) proceeded to call it the best game that he has ever been a part of.

And then he proceeded to talk about how the game-winning bucket went in on St. Patrick’s day, which of course, is celebrated heavily at Notre Dame. Brey went on to offer the best quote of the tournament of the so far, and a strong frontrunner for the entire thing.

The Irish will fly to San Diego to play its first round game against Alabama on Friday. Brey said that there better be some Irish whiskey on the plane because he is drinking some of that. To sign things off, Brey wished everybody a happy Saint Patrick’s Day.

Take a listen:

Brey’s interview was one of the best moments of the First Four, which offered some fantastic entertainment that you can find the best of right here!
