As college football programs around the country look for new, innovative ways to stand out, the field on which they play is starting to play a bigger role than in years prior. Obviously, there is the smurf turf at Boise State, red turf in Washington, grey tuft at Eastern Michigan and teal turf at Coastal Carolina, but field design is going beyond eye-popping color or the traditional gridiron green.

Much like college basketball, teams are starting to get creative. Ohio State is one of them.

The Buckeyes are getting a new playing surface inside the Horseshoe and fans are playing a big role in deciding what it will look like. During the bye week in October, Ohio State announced a fan-inspired turf design contest.

Fans from all over the country submitted their thoughts for what the turf should look like. On Sunday, the Buckeyes revealed a collage of what is presumably the best 48.

Some of the designs are simple and classic. Some of them are flashy and in-your-face, similar to the one at Eastern Washington. Others are a mix of the two.

Regardless of what design Ohio State chooses — presumably one of the more basic ones — they can’t go wrong. All 42 are awesome and offer a fresh look.

Take a look:

If Ohio State is smart, it will go with one of the basic ones that has just enough flair to stand out. Don’t over do it, like Oregon’s forest-themed basketball court, but adding something new to the mix could put the Buckeyes on the cutting-edge of field design.
