Pat McAfee joined the College GameDay desk at the Rose Bowl on Saturday morning. It was early.
The broadcast began at 6:00am local time, which means that the crew likely had to arrive to the set at about 4:30/5:00am, which means that they were probably up and at’em around 4:00am. McAfee, Desmond Howard, Kirk Herbstreit, Rece Davis and Lee Corso were live on ESPN for nearly an hour before the sun rose. Oh, and it was pouring rain!
All of this goes to say that they needed a minute to shake the sandman. Their brains weren’t firing on all cylinders right out of the gates.
Especially Pat McAfee, who had not been on the desk in approximately a month and was coming off of a late-night trip to the Cotton Bowl. He had to dial things back from his normal day-to-day shenanigans and failed to do so early on.
The former NFL punter was just a little bit fired up about Georgia wide receiver Ladd McConkey during his first rant on Saturday’s edition of College GameDay. McAfee accidentally let an F-Bomb fly before catching himself and replacing the cuss word with a “freaking.”
Fortunately, whomever was in charge of the dump button was on his or her A-game!
Howard and Davis started cracking up as soon as the F— left McAfee’s mouth. It took a second for Corso to register what just happened, but he too started laughing.
Herbstreit was a bit more hesitant and looked around nervously to make sure that nobody was angry with his deskmate’s slip. Once everybody else was on board with the shenanigans, he was clear to chuckle along.
No harm, no foul!
Shoutout to the dump button-presser back in Bristol who had a few extra hours of sleep and got in a cup of coffee before the broadcast went to air. McAfee’s F-Bomb never stood a chance!
