Travis Kelce Took Cheap Shot At Patrick Mahomes While Defending Himself For Behind-The-Back Pass

Patrick Mahomes threw a behind-the-back pass to Travis Kelce out of pure spite. It worked, even though it was not a planned play, but it caused a riff between the tight end and his quarterback.

Fortunately, the spat was all in good fun… probably.

Mahomes first attempted the behind-the-back pass during practice in 2022 and hit the crossbar with an absolute dart. He tries the unique throw during practice on a fairly frequent basis and hits at a rate of about 85%, so Kelce used to give him a hard time for not working an attempt into a game.

His wish finally came true during a preseason game against the Lions on Saturday!

However, Mahomes was not supposed to go behind his back. Kelce — unintentionally — forced the two-time MVP to get crafty by running the wrong route.

The throw was awesome. It was so smooth and so successful that it looked intentional.

A Detroit defender crashed down as Mahomes rolled to his right. Kelce slipped into the flat and settled in a gap about five yards out. In that moment, the wizard-like quarterback floated the ball over to his tight end for a nine-yard game and a first down.

Here is how it looked on the broadcast:

Patrick Mahomes was asked about the behind-the-back pass during an interview in the second half. He explained that it only came together because Travis Kelce didn’t run the route that was called.

The $450 million quarterback threw his tight end under the bus. Mahomes put Kelce on blast.

When asked for his account of what happened, Taylor Swift’s boyfriend took a cheap shot at his signal-caller’s voice. Mahomes is often mocked for sounding like Kermit the Frog, which apparently created some confusion during the huddle and ultimately led to the behind-the-back pass.

Travis Kelce has been playing with Patrick Mahomes since 2017. They have a great rapport. They are great friends. The Kermit voice hasn’t caused any issues in the past so to bring it up and put him on blast for absolutely no reason, even as a joke, is tired and played out. Lame!

Regardless of the circumstances, we got to see the behind-the-back pass in a game! That was cool.
