Patrick Mahomes’ father was able to avoid a lengthy jail sentence after pleading guilty to his third DUI in Texas a couple of years ago. He struck a deal that was accompanied by a number of restrictions, and he’s asking a court to waive some of them so he can travel to watch his son do his thing this season.
In 2024, Patrick Mahomes found himself dealing with an off-the-field distraction around a week before he was set to play in Super Bowl LVIII when his father, Patrick Mahomes Sr., was charged with his third DUI offense after blowing a .23 during a traffic stop that was executed in Smith County, Texas.
The younger Mahomes was able to come away with a win in that contest, and his dad also managed to get one in court when you consider the felony charge he was facing was punishable by up to ten years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000.
The elder Mahomes entered a guilty plea later that year and was sentenced to 10 days in jail along with 160 hours of community service, a court-mandated rehabilitation program, and five years’ probation that’s accompanied by routine testing for drugs and alcohol and travel restrictions concerning movement outside of Texas.
However, he has occasionally been granted the chance to watch his son play at games outside the border of the Lone Star State, and he’s hoping that will be the case again this season.
Patrick Mahomes is trying to get permission to travel to seven Chiefs games while on probation
Mahomes was able to get permission to travel to New Orleans to watch the Chiefs get rocked by the Eagles in Super Bowl LIX, but he landed in hot water after missing a court-ordered drug test a couple of days after that contest.
However, he was able to leave the state for at least a couple of games last year (he was present at a preseason showdown in Arizona and Kansas City’s game against the Giants in September), and he’s hoping that will also be the case in 2026.
According to KLTV, Mahomes has petitioned the 7th District Court in Tyler, Texas for permission to travel to a total of seven games this season.
Five of them will be in Kansas City, but he’s also angling to go to Las Vegas when the Raiders host the Chiefs on October 4th and head up to Cincinnati when they play the Bengals on December 13th (he didn’t have the option to catch a game in Texas, as Kansas City isn’t slated to play the Cowboys or the Texans during the regular season).
The filing states Mahomes is currently in “compliance with all current probation conditions,” and he has agreed to urine tests before and after traveling (his location can be tracked by the ankle bracelet he’s still required to wear).
Barring any further incidents, his probation will end in 2029.
