The New England Patriots are reportedly set to bolster their backfield with the addition of former Dallas Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott, according to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport.

The impending deal, a one-year contract with a maximum value of $6 million, is said to have been initiated following Elliott’s successful free-agent visit during the ongoing training camp.

Elliott, a seasoned player with a remarkable track record, is set to don the number 15 jersey – a nod to his college years.

The accomplished running back, a two-time All-Pro and three-time Pro-Bowler, has enjoyed a stellar career since being selected fourth overall by the Cowboys in the 2016 NFL Draft.

Despite his previous accomplishments, Elliott’s recent performances have shown signs of diminishing efficiency.

His rushing yards per carry dropped below 4.0 during the 2022 season, where he managed 876 yards on 231 attempts – translating to an average of 3.8 yards per carry.

Nevertheless, over the entirety of his career, Elliott has amassed an impressive total of 8,262 rushing yards and 68 touchdowns. Additionally, his versatility shines through his 402 receptions for 2,336 yards and 12 touchdowns.

Elliott’s journey took an unexpected turn after signing a lucrative 6-year, $90 million extension with the Cowboys back in 2019. He was released from the team after the conclusion of the 2022 season.

Now, as the 2023 season approaches, Elliott is ready to embark on a new chapter with the Patriots, offering them a dynamic presence in their backfield.
