Heading into the weekend, La Liga 2 club Real Oviedo had a chance to do something they hadn’t done in just over 2 decades. They had a chance to be promoted to La Liga.

They had 2 paths to get there heading into the season’s last match. No matter what, they needed a win. They also needed a loss from either Girona or Las Palmas. Late in their match, it didn’t appear any of these things would actually happen.

Las Palmas beat Sporting Gijon in their last match to secure promotion. That left a Girona losing as the only way Real Oviedo could be promoted, but there were two problems. Girona was tied 0-0 with Burgos late in their match and Real Oviedo was still tied 2-2 with Ibiza.

Then Real Oviedo scored a 95th minute winner to give themselves hope. After the win, some fans at the match started the rumor that Burgos had scored a late winner of their own to allow Oviedo to be promoted instead of Girona.

The team began to celebrate after hearing the news, but the celebration was interrupted when they learned the truth. Girona’s match ended in a draw and Real Oviedo would have to wait at least one more season before returning to La Liga for the first time since 2001.

You have to wonder how this kind of thing could actually happen at a professional sporting event. Sure, the players obviously don’t have their phones on them during the match, but how do the manager and the rest of the coaching staff not know the scores of these other matches?

Of course the focus for them should be winning their match, but you would think that somebody would be keeping them updated on the other important matches.

In this scenario, a quick check of whatever app that coaching staff uses to check scores could have saved Real Oviedo a bit of extra heartbreak.
