Boston Broadcasters Demanded Retaliation After Jazz Chisholm Broke Unwritten Rule

Jazz Chisholm broke unwritten baseball rules.


The New York Yankees annihilated the rival Red Sox in MLB action over the weekend. Jazz Chisholm padded his stat line with a few questionable steals late in the game.

Boston broadcasters wanted to see retaliation in response to the “bush league” antics. They advocated for Austin Wells to be plunked during an eighth inning at-bat.

Chisholm overstepped the line of gamesmanship in the blowout. His late game baserunning irritated the guys in the booth. He broke an unwritten rule.

Yankees annihilate Red Sox.

It was an ugly game for Boston from start to finish. The Red Sox fell behind 5-0 through five frames. It was 7-0 before the start of the eighth. The deficit would balloon to 15 runs when all was said and done.

Boston’s bats were cold. Yankees starter Will Warren completed seven innings with just 98 pitches. He allowed one run on a Nick Sogard single in the eighth. That was all the offense could muster.

Red Sox pitching was far worse. New York racked up 16 runs on 18 hits, five of which left the yard.

Most of the damage was done in the eighth inning. The Yankees scored nine runs to put an exclamation point on the rivalry win. Jazz Chisholm took advantage as the Red Sox waved the white flag.

New York led 7-1 in the bottom of the frame. Chisholm started the inning with a five-pitch walk. The defense was not holding him on first base, so he stole second.

He then swiped third.

The move was considered “bush league” by the broadcast crew. It was a stat padding effort to get to 40 steals.

I am not fully aware of any contract incentives written into Chisholm’s current deal. He may unlock certain bonuses related to steal totals come season’s end. Still, Boston didn’t believe he went about this situation the right way.

“Listen, you’re up six, it’s the eighth. The team is electing not to hold you on,” said Will Middlebrooks. “That’s the white flag. Normally in that situation, you don’t run.”

His partner Will Fleming responded by saying, “Wouldn’t you sort of like to see (Jovani) Moran drill (Austin) Wells right here?… (Chisholm’s) a bush league player.”

The Red Sox did not plunk Austin Wells. He later homered in the at-bat. The calls for retaliation continued.

“Moran should fight Chisholm,” Fleming continued. “He’s walking towards the third base line staring at him… Chisholm plays the game the wrong way.”

The Wells homer sparked the nine-run inning. It was one of four home runs in the frame.

New York capped its series with a 16-1 win. It will be interesting to see if the baserunning is remembered should the two rivals meet in the postseason.
